The latest update to Perfect Corp.’s system now supports the upload of glTF 2.0 (Graphics Library Transmission Format) files, streamlining 3D file upload and formatting processes for brand partners in the jewelry and watch industries. The update simplifies 3D model creation by allowing brands to upload wireframe details, texture maps and environmental lighting information of products in one smooth workflow.

Inside the Evolution of glTF: Microsoft & Babylon.js Collaboration with the Khronos Group

Gary Hsu from Microsoft recounts Microsoft's history of involvement in the 3D Formats Working Group and its work on the glTF file format. Gary details his group's early work in PBR, helping define glTF 2.0, their participation in the Khronos Working Group meetings, Face to Faces and conferences, and their present involvement.

Building Bridges in 3D: AOUSD and Khronos Collaborate on OpenUSD and glTF Interoperability

In a world where 3D content creation and distribution are rapidly evolving, the need for seamless interoperability and shared standards has never been more critical. That's why the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) and Khronos Group have today announced a liaison agreement to align and enhance OpenUSD and glTF technologies. This liaison marks a significant step towards unified 3D asset creation and deployment, streamlining the process for developers and end-users alike.

Khronos Releases Open-Source iOS App for Viewing glTF Files

Khronos glTF Viewer” is live on the Apple App Store with source code immediately available on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license; developer participation and feedback is welcome. This app is distinct from the glTF Sample Viewer, the official browser-based reference viewer from Khronos. Rather, it is squarely focused on bringing glTF viewing capabilities to iOS devices, bridging a crucial gap for the “JPEG of 3D” and hastening a future where content creators can deploy glTF assets on any target platform.

PlayCanvas Blog: glTF Viewer 4.0 Adds WebGPU Support

PlayCanvas announced an update to their glTF Viewer 4.0 adding a new WebGPU renderer, enhanced WebXR AR mode, a frame selected node, better immersion with Projective Sky Dome, debug and inspect with render mode, and enhanced realism with Variance Shadow Mapping (VSM). Avataar Blog: Importance of glTF and Khronos’ Commitment to 3D Standardization

Dan Frith, Vice President of 3D Platform at Avataar.ai and Chair of Khronos’ 3D Commerce Working Group, pens this blog on the evolution of glTF becoming the standard for 3D content, the significance of glTF in the industry, and how glTF will be the key to standardization in the metaverse.

glTF SIGGRAPH Rewind

At SIGGRAPH 2023, Khronos hosted a series of packed-house Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) sessions exploring the latest updates and future developments for glTF, the open-standard 3D format that allows content creators to build an asset once and use it everywhere. Standing-room-only gatherings of content creators, platform providers and tool vendors discussed new glTF capabilities spanning materials, complex scenes and interactivity, physics, real-time asset delivery for metaverse applications, and skeletal-facial anchoring for virtual try-on and its widespread and key use in e-commerce.

glTF Webinar - Tuesday, September 19th

Unleashing Creativity in 3D Models with glTF and PBR - Join us for this webinar presented by Eric Chadwick to exploring the artistic frontier of using The Khronos Group glTF 3D assets. The webinar takes place at 9am PST on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. The artistic creation of realistic materials in real-time 3D models in glTF using physically-based rendering (PBR) is discussed and demonstrated. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the best practices, workflows, and optimizations required to simulate iridescent, anisotropy, and other effects and to achieve stunning visual realism for 3D assets. Eric will discuss the techniques used and available tools to achieve them, with plenty of time for Q&A. For additional info and to register visit:

Optimize 3D Assets with Khronos’ New glTF-Compressor Tool

The glTF open standard 3D asset format from the Khronos Group enables online retailers and adtech platforms to enhance their interactive customer experiences with runtime-efficient, 3D product models. With the latest glTF PBR (Physically Based Rendering) material extensions, artists can create incredibly detailed and realistic assets – but in many cases, they’ve been held back by concerns about how these assets would perform on the web due to large texture sizes. Today, Khronos is releasing the open source glTF-Compressor tool for interactively optimizing and fine tuning texture compression settings, to help users adjust their 3D assets for optimal web delivery.

Roblox Announces 3D Importer Support for glTF Files (Beta)

Historically, Roblox had two mesh import options, OBJ or FBX. Now there is a new option, glTF! In this beta release, Roblox is supporting 3D mesh models and PBR textures. Support for rigged models, skinning, and animations will come in a future update.

Open Geospatial Consortium Adopts 3D Tiles v1.1 Introducing new glTF Extensions

3D Tiles is used for sharing, visualizing, fusing, and interacting with massive heterogenous 3D geospatial content across desktop, web, mobile – and now metaverse – applications. Previously referred to as “3D Tiles Next,” Version 1.1 of the 3D Tiles Community Standard is designed for streaming high-resolution, semantically-rich 3D geospatial data to the metaverse. 3D Tiles 1.1 promotes several 3D Tiles 1.0 extensions to ‘core’ and introduces new glTF extensions for fine-grained metadata storage.

What does glTF mean for the Metaverse

Built specifically for 3D content, gITF is lightweight and easy to process on any device or platform, including mobile phones and web browsers. The gITF textures can allow creators to take a JPEG-sized file and immediately unpack it into a native GPU solution, reducing both the memory required and data transmission times by 5 to 10 times. This can be crucial for delivering content to consumers as quickly as possible in the metaverse.
