Dan Frith, Vice President of 3D Platform at Avataar.ai and Chair of Khronos’ 3D Commerce Working Group, pens this blog on the evolution of glTF becoming the standard for 3D content, the significance of glTF in the industry, and how glTF will be the key to standardization in the metaverse.

3D Formats Working Group Chair, Daniel Frith explores technological approaches to make 3D content creation easy and accessible for anyone. Using AI, it is possible to create a 3D camera that will significantly contribute to democratizing 3D content creation. Through Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF)-based methods, his company, Avataar, has discovered that they can lay the foundation for high-quality 3D assets using only 2D input images.

NeRF-based 3D asset creation is already helping retailers scale 3D asset creation for e-commerce. At the same time, organizations like The Khronos Group and the Metaverse Standards Forum are actively working to make sure it’s possible to move those assets freely across platforms and hardware. Soon, average consumers may be able to use the same tools they use to make TikTok videos to create and share 3D objects. This will mark a true tipping point for the metaverse: a time when billions of people can not only experience the metaverse but also actively build it.

Less than a year after its initial launch, the Metaverse Standards Forum announces that it is now incorporated as an independent non-profit industry consortium. The Forum’s mission continues unchanged—to enable, foster and promote cooperation and coordination over metaverse-related interoperability between standards organizations, companies, and universities.  In June 2022, the Forum was launched and driven by the Khronos Group. Today, with over 2,400 members and multiple active Working and Exploratory Groups focused on driving pragmatic interoperability advances, the Metaverse Standards Forum has organized its own governance, finances, and operations.

In this episode of ACM ByteCast, Rashmi Mohan hosts Neil Trevett as they discuss Neil's career, the evolution of computer graphics, and his role at NVIDIA, where his work focuses on helping developers make good use of GPUs. He also explains the benefits of standardization in industry and how open standards can enable innovation and interoperability. Neil also discusses how 3D is changing the landscape of e-commerce and online shopping and gives his perspective on the Metaverse and how it can leverage other disruptive technologies.

Leading standards organizations and companies have united to drive open metaverse interoperability needed to build the open metaverse. The Metaverse Standards Forum will explore where the lack of interoperability is holding back metaverse deployment and how the work of Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) defining and evolving needed standards may be coordinated and accelerated. Open to all at no cost, the Forum will focus on pragmatic, action-based projects such as implementation prototyping, hackathons, plugfests, and open-source tooling to accelerate the testing and adoption of metaverse standards, while also developing consistent terminology and deployment guidelines.
