On Tuesday, January 22, the Metaverse Standards Forum (MSF) hosted a virtual town hall to explore a pressing question: Are Gaussian Splats (GS) ready for standardization? The event drew hundreds of participants and sparked a lively debate. Already, the conversation is slated to continue at MSF’s “Gaussian Splats Town Hall Part 2” on March 5, 2025.
The Khronos 3D Formats Working Group is developing a new addition to the glTF ecosystem that will revolutionize how complex 3D scenes are built on the Web. While glTF, the widely-adopted asset open standard for 3D web content, typically handles one asset at a time, this addition will enable creators to efficiently combine multiple glTF assets into sophisticated scenes. The 3D Formats Working Group is still weighing whether this project will ultimately be released as a glTF extension or an entirely new format. For the purposes of this blog, we will discuss it as the latter: the “glTF External Reference Format.”
The glTF Sample Viewer is an essential part of the glTF ecosystem. Developed by the Khronos 3D Formats Working Group, this open-source JavaScript viewer highlights the latest features of glTF, renders glTF files directly in a web browser, and can be easily integrated into other JavaScript projects using glTF. Working closely with UX3D, a software company specializing in 3D rendering and user interfaces, Khronos has released version 1.1 of the Viewer, offering substantial functionality and usability improvements. In this blog, we’ll explore the new features of the glTF Sample Viewer 1.1 and share insights on how we’ve made it easier to integrate Sample Viewer into web applications.
This year, the Khronos 3D Formats Working Group has reached several significant milestones along the roadmap for developing glTF into an interoperable spatial computing format, and has several extension development efforts underway. Many key extensions for spatial consistency, improved material rendering and consistent render fidelity have now reached the Review Draft stage, where they are ready for detailed review and initial testing. There are also several new extensions in the Initial Draft phase, where the Working Group is seeking directional input to ensure specification development aligns with the community’s needs. We are cranking and getting work done! This blog will review recent ecosystem updates, explain current specs nearing release candidacy, and highlight opportunities for community input, inviting glTF stakeholders to share useful feedback to shape the future development of the glTF ecosystem.

glTF Interactivity Specification Released for Public Comment
Today, the Khronos 3D Formats Working Group is pleased to announce that the glTF 2.0 Interactivity Extension (KHR_interactivity) specification draft is available for public review and feedback before ratification. This new extension uses behavior graphs, enabling content creators to add logic and behaviors to glTF assets, with a focus on safety, portability and ease of implementation.

Khronos Releases Open-Source iOS App for Viewing glTF Files
glTF is the most portable and accessible asset format for bringing 3D content to diverse platforms, including the web. This open, royalty-free specification minimizes the runtime processing to unpack and process 3D assets, while also supporting sophisticated graphics functionality, rich textures, and diverse materials. Broad industry support for glTF includes adoption of glTF 2.0 as an ISO/IEC International Standard. Now, Khronos is pleased to announce an open-source native iOS app, “Khronos glTF Viewer,” that enables users to view and interact with glTF assets on iOS devices, including in AR. This app is distinct from the glTF Sample Viewer, the official browser-based reference viewer from Khronos. Rather, it is squarely focused on bringing glTF viewing capabilities to iOS devices, bridging a crucial gap for the “JPEG of 3D” and hastening a future where content creators can deploy glTF assets on any target platform. “Khronos glTF Viewer” is live on the Apple App Store with source code immediately available on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license; developer participation and feedback is welcome

There are many approaches to creating realistic-looking materials for 3D objects. Physically Based Rendering (PBR) has emerged as an artist-friendly, intuitive, expressive, and robust technique for adding materials to 3D objects. The Khronos 3D Formats Working Group has embraced this approach, and over the past few years, they have created formal glTF extensions for a variety of PBR materials. glTF’s growing set of PBR material extensions allow artists to create strikingly realistic 3D objects – suitable for cross-platform applications including browsers, mobile devices, native applications and more – that will perform consistently across a wide range of viewers and devices.
