Khronos Group President, Neil Trevett, shares how open standards have an important role mitigating the complexities of safety-critical certification in a confusing landscape of processors, accelerators, compilers, APIs, and libraries, that drive up integration costs for embedded accelerators, which in turn has constrained innovation and time-to-market efficiencies.

Khronos and EMVA Issue Call for Participation for New Camera API Working Group
The Khronos Group and the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA) announce the formation of a new Camera Working Group to develop an open, royalty-free API standard for controlling camera system runtimes in embedded, mobile, industrial, XR, automotive, and scientific markets. Over 70 companies participated in an EMVA/Khronos-hosted Exploratory Group during 2021 to develop a Scope of Work document that will guide the direction of the API design. Design work is expected to start in February 2022, and any organization is invited to join Khronos to participate.
Presidents of EMVA and The Khronos Group Discuss Embedded Camera Exploratory Group
In this interview, European Machine Vision Association (EMVA) President, Chris Yates, and Khronos Group President, Neil Trevett discuss the industry’s interest in the creation of open, royalty-free API standards for controlling embedded cameras and sensors.
Shaping the Scene for Vision Standardization
In response to industry requests, the EMVA and The Khronos Group joined forced in February 2021 to form an Embedded Camera API Exploratory Group, open to all at no cost, to explore industry interest in the creation of open API standards for controlling embedded cameras and sensors. All participants — currently, 60 companies, with 145 representatives — are able to discuss use cases and requirements for new interoperability standards to accelerate market growth and reduce development costs in embedded markets using vision and sensor processing and associated acceleration. All sensor and camera manufacturers, silicon vendors, and software developers working on vision and sensor processing can participate in this initiative. If the exploratory group reaches significant consensus, then EMVA and Khronos will work together to initiate the proposed standardization initiatives at the appropriate organization.
The IMVE Interview: Khronos and EMVA Discuss New Embedded Camera Exploratory Group
Imagine & Machine Vision Europe (IMVE) sat down with Khronos President, Neil Trevett and EMVA President, Chris Yates to discuss the new exploratory group for embedded cameras and sensors. They discussed the scope of the new effort, what the groups hope to achieve, the exploratory group process, and why now.
Embedded Camera API Exploratory Group Receives Positive Industry Response - 40+ Companies Have Joined the Group
The Exploratory Group is Hosted by EMVA and Khronos to explore the creation of open royalty-free API standards for controlling embedded cameras and sensors. It is open to any camera, sensor, and silicon vendors, together with system integrators and software developers with an interest in sensor processing applications.
Since its announcement in late February, the Exploratory Group membership has already grown to over 40 members, and has received a positive reception from the press:
- EE Times - Looking for APIs That Sit Between Sensors and Vehicle Apps?
- New Electronics - Exploratory Group to consider embedded camera and sensor API standards
Exploratory Group meetings start on March 25th and it is not too late to join. There is no cost, and any interested organization is welcome!
More details and instructions for joining the group are here.
